Welcome to Module Two! Live Your Dreams Essential Question: Is there only one path to success? Dear Parents and Guardians, What is the most effective way to teach the world about something you care about? Module 2 strives to teach students about the power of understanding informational text structures, features and strategies for understanding ideas within a text. By studying excerpts from Dreams of My Father by Barack Obama and Peak Performance, the story of 18-year-old Samantha Larson's trip up Mount Everest, students will determine the most effective ways to deliver a message while learning about some impressive people. In order to develop this kind of thinking, we need your help! Students need to become text analysis detectives while reading, and they will need encouragement throughout this transformation. Here are a few ideas of activities that would support our home-school partnership:
Anchor Texts: *These texts will be provided to students in class. Please ask about them, and consider reading the entire text together.* 1.) excerpt from Dreams of My Father by Barack Obama 2.) excerpt from The Jacket by Gary Soto 3.) Peak Performance by Samantha Larson 4.) excerpt from "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. Assessment Dates: Short quizzes will be used after we feel the students have mastered the content. As of now, here is the quiz schedule. Please note: These dates may change based on our pacing, but we will update Weebly as soon as possible.
Department Final Exam- Dec. 16 A study guide will be provided by December 1. Please help your student memorize the important information. Then practice applying it as you talk about text in the world. Formal Writing Task: Due on December 16 Students will write an informative essay that will provide information on how Samantha Larson from the story “Peak Performance” achieved her goal of climbing Mount Everest. The writing will include an introduction, one body paragraph, and a concluding paragraph. We will write the first drafts of each part of the assignment in class, and offer written feedback for the students. Students are then expected to take our feedback and write a final draft of the part of the assignment. Final drafts may need to be finished at home as all students work at different paces. Look for these components the night before the due date:
Culminating Activity due December 15, 2016: Students will be presenting information on a topic of their choice to the class using the most effective structure, devices and techniques. Teachers will provide the research based on student interests. Then each student will need to write about their new understandings in two pieces. While writing to inform, students must select the best devices, techniques and structure to present the research. While writing to persuade, students must repeat the process using the best tools to persuade their audience. Students will then determine the best, or most effective, presentation and write a paragraph about their new understandings. Students will be making a poster that includes a final copy of their two articles and paragraph. The poster will be completed in class, but the final copies may need to be finished at home as all students work at different paces. Look for these components the night before the due date:
Independent Reading: In addition to our class work, students need to be reading each night for at least 20 minutes. Throughout this unit, we will provide the novels and small assignments that students need to complete to show evidence that they are reading each night. 607 On Targets #5: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 11/9: Assigned 11/14: Part 1 Due 11/17: Part 2 Due 11/23: Final On Target part and book due in class #6: The Whipping Boy 11/23: Assigned 12/2: Part 1 Due 12/9: Final On Target due #7: From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E.
